The leisure potential of Barcelona’s Port Vell culminates at the IMAX, the large-screen cinema on the Moll d’Espanya quay. It was designed by the architects Enric Sòria and Jordi Garcés, and opened in 1995. This was the first of these innovative venues to open in Spain, and is perfect for anyone looking for leisure and a thrilling cinematic experience away from the noise and bustle of Barcelona.

The IMAX cinema in Port Vell shows films to suit all tastes and interests on a large screen. Viewers can choose from three formats: the IMAX, with films projected onto a 27-metre-high, flat screen with crystal-clear image quality; the Omnimax, a wrap-around, 180º screen covering 900m2 of projection surface; and 3D, which adds a whole new dimension to the cinema experience with state-of-the-art polarised glasses.

The broad appeal of the subjects of the films, together with the digital sound delivered through a powerful 27,000 watt system, and the sheer quality of the images, immerse the viewer in the astonishing, realistic world of IMAX movies. In 1996, the cinema hosted the 18th International IMAX Movie Theatre Congress and the 1st IMAX International Film Festival I Festival Internacional de Cinema de gran ciutat and has become one of Barcelona’s main leisure attractions.
